Fairtrade in Aberdeen

Fairtrade aims to help farmers and workers in developing countries receive a fair price for the products they produce. Fairtrade ensures better working conditions and job security for producers.

Aberdeen was the first city in Scotland to achieve Fairtrade status in 2004.

More than 4,500 products carry the Fairtrade mark from coffee and tea, to flowers and juices. Search for where to buy your Fairtrade Mark products.

Achieving Fairtrade status

To achieve Fairtrade status a city must continue to take action on the five goals set by the Fairtrade Foundation. These are:

  1. Local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade products.
  2. A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the area's shops and served in local cafés, restaurants and pubs.
  3. Local workplaces and community organisations support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products wherever possible.
  4. Media coverage and events raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.
  5. A local Fairtrade steering group is convened to ensure the campaign continues to develop and gain new support.

Fairtrade schools

The Fairtrade Schools Award gives primary and secondary school students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and understanding of global issues. Studying Fairtrade links in well with the Curriculum for Excellence in themes such as enterprise, citizenship, sustainable development and international education. We currently have 3 secondary schools and 18 primary schools in Aberdeen who have achieved Fairtrade school accreditation.
